Images of Mexico in the 19th century, from field exploration to the Paris World's Fairs.
Independent in 1821, Mexico was still little known in Europe. A land of adventure and opportunity, its exploration revealed a wealth of natural resources that soon attracted investors.
Mining engineers contributed to this exploration through scientific expeditions such as the one initiated by Napoleon III between 1861 and 1867.
At the same time, Mexico itself sought to make a name for itself on the international scene by taking part in Universal Exhibitions, in order to renew visitors' image of a country in full evolution, eager to show the world its modernity.
